Marriage Tip: Renew Your Wedding Vows
Even if you both need some healing, renewing your wedding vows can increase your level of commitment and strengthen your relationship. It is also an action that takes divorce out of the picture…because once you entertain that idea it just keeps on going unfortunately… So if you want to end that snowball’s momentum, renewing your wedding vows is the best way to do that.
The chances are good that you look back on your wedding day with fondness. You were surrounded by friends, family, and the person you love the most in the world. It was such a happy day full of love! You can get those feelings back by renewing your vows to one another.
While there are some canned vows out there, you might choose to write your own. These can speak to where you are in your relationship right now, and where you are committed to be in the future.
To write your own vows, follow these steps:
l Write down the top 5 things you love about your spouse
l Write down 3 things you promise to your loved one
l Write down 3 things you hope for your marriage
After you have these lists prepared, write a few paragraphs from the heart in a way that will deliver their meaning to your spouse. You can choose to read these in front of friends and family members (this is great if you have children who are worried you’re getting a divorce) or alone. Keep in mind that doing this in front of other people can help make you even more committed to seeing this through.
Remember, you might not be ready for this and your partner might not be ready for this. You are good candidates once you both commit yourself to making your marriage work.
Also, saying these vows does not mean that things will instantly get better! But I guarantee that it will mean that you will have renewed your commitment in your own mind and in your partner’s mind. And sometimes this commitment is all you need to make things better. This is a powerful step that shouldn’t be missed…
