Don’t Embarass Your Wife In Public
So like many people, tonight I watched the Super Bowl. Though I’m a bit disappointed the Cards didn’t win (it’s hard not to like Kurt Warner), I’m glad it was a good football game. But football isn’t the point of this post…
Rather, I was reminded tonight of a very important thing to do in any marriage — to speak good about your spouse in public! So here’s the scenario… Jen and I (and the kids) went to my parent’s house for the big game… My mom of course went crazy making all sorts of awesome food (wings, cheesy “church” potatoes, swedish meatballs, etc.), but here I go getting off topic again…
Anyway…
At one point my littlest guy, Daniel, was standing on top of one of the dining room chairs. Keep in mind he’s 19 months. Yeah, not the best table manners in the world….I agree (we’re working on it :). But anyway, there he was, reaching on his tippy toes for a potato chip so he could promptly dip it in the french onion concotion my mom had whipped up… But alas the little fellow lost his balance…And all of a sudden…
THUD.
He drops to the (hardwood) floor. Just like that.
Crying, screaming… Of course I ran over to Daniel as fast as I could and picked the little bugger off the floor. He was actually okay in a few minutes and calmed down well. But I was a little frustrated by the whole thing, because this was the 2nd time today that this very thing happened! Just hours earlier the exact same thing had happened at our house (that time he was reaching for a strawberry, I think, but you get the point).
So when it happened a second time at my mom’s, I blurted out…”C’mon Jen, this is the 2nd time in 4 hours!”.
Uhh, not a good move.
I got the “look” for my wife, because I had uttered these condemning words not just to her, but also in the presence of my mom, my dad, and the rest of my side of the family.
Yeah, not too wise, eh?
I promptly apologized when I realized I had embarrased her. So let this serve as a reminder to you: lift up your spouse in public, don’t put her down!
Oh, and keep those strawberries and potato chips off the dining room table. ![]()
